English as a Second Language Program
The goal of our English as a second language (ESL) program is to enable limited English proficient students for whom ESL is the appropriate program, to become competent in the comprehension, speaking, reading and writing of the English language through the integrated use of second language methods. The ESL program will emphasize the mastery of English language skills, as well as the content areas of mathematics, science and social studies. All, as integral parts of the academic goals for all students, allowing limited English proficient children to participate equitably in school. The basic curriculum content of this program follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), as required by the state.
English Language Learner Program Instructional Supports
The elementary campus offers a content-based program and pull-out program. the secondary campus offers a content-based to implement the English Language Proficiency Standards, a set of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that foster English Language acquisition. Teachers providing instructional supports are English as a Second Language (ESL) certified or Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) trained. These credentials ensure all teachers can successfully implement supports to accelerate mastery of the English language.
English Language Learner (ELL) supports are provided by the ESL certified classroom teacher and also the ESL coordinator, who provides inclusion support in the classroom and may pull students to offer more specific or scaffolded supports in a small group or individual environment. At the secondary campus, all English and Reading teachers are ESL certified, and some core subject teachers are SIOP trained. Students receive their support embedded in classroom instruction for core courses.
