Before a student receives instruction on the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, dating violence and sex trafficking, the district must obtain written consent from the student’s parent. Parents will be sent a request for written consent at least 14 days before the instruction will begin.
Students in junior and high school receive instruction related to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking. The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) makes recommendations for curriculum materials, and the school board adopts the materials and determines the specific content of the instruction.
Lackland ISD uses three resources for instruction on the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking, The Great Body Shop (6-8), Goodheart-Wilcox Texas Health Skills for Middle School (6-8), and Goodheart-Wilcox Texas Health Skills for High School. The description of each program’s curriculum is as follows:
The Great Body Shop is a comprehensive state-approved health education curriculum that is sequential, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and medically accurate. The Great Body Shop contains the most reliable and up-to-date information aligned to National Health Education Standards, the National Sexuality Education Standards, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Characteristics of Effective Health Education Curricular, the core concepts recommended by CDC’s HECAT and the Texas Education Knowledge and Skills. Topics related to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking are presented in specific chapters as a unit of study for students with specific instruction opt-in permissions.
