National Arts in Education Week September 7–13, 2025

National Arts in Education Week: Celebrating the Power of Creativity in Schools

National Arts in Education Week is a nationwide celebration that highlights the critical role the arts play in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and cultural understanding in schools. Observed every year during the second week of September, this event provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of incorporating arts into the educational curriculum, and it serves as a platform for students, educators, and communities to advocate for increased arts funding and access. From visual arts and theater to music and dance, the arts have the unique ability to enrich students’ academic experience while helping them develop vital skills that transcend the classroom.
The Importance of Arts in Education
The arts are not merely an extracurricular activity—they are an essential component of a well-rounded education. Through the arts, students are encouraged to express themselves, explore different perspectives, and engage in creative problem-solving. Research has shown that students who participate in the arts perform better academically, demonstrate higher levels of engagement in school, and develop stronger social-emotional skills.
Moreover, the arts have been shown to play a crucial role in improving cognitive abilities. Studies have found that students involved in the arts are more likely to excel in subjects such as math and science because the arts help develop critical thinking, pattern recognition, and spatial reasoning. Furthermore, participating in arts education fosters collaboration, empathy, and communication skills—qualities that are increasingly valued in the modern workforce.

Family Engagement

Lackland ISD strongly desires parent engagement. You have an opportunity to share your voice and help us actualize our vision to ignite a passion for life-long learning and empower excellence. As you engage as a parent, we also invite your participation in campus and district-level committees. Below are the descriptions for these committees for your consideration. If you have additional questions, each committee’s point of contact is listed with the committee description.
Please read each description and share your interest in supporting the committee or learning more about it.

School Health Advisory Council
The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the health education program. The council will address the continued implementation of a coordinated health program, including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, a healthy school environment, staff health promotion, and family/community involvement. This committee must have more parent representation than district staff representation. The SHAC meets at least four times during the school year. Two meetings occur after-school, and two meetings occur during the school day.
Point of Contact: Dr. Tonya Hydehyde.t@lacklandisd.net

District Education Improvement Council (DEIC)
The District Education Improvement Council (DEIC) is a district-level committee responsible for providing input to the annual development of the District Improvement Plan. This plan comprises the district’s goals and objectives for continuous improvement in special programs, professional development, student achievement, and student safety. This committee is also designated to provide recommendations to Texas Education Agency waiver requests and other items of local governance to be addressed by a district-level committee before Board of Trustee approval.
Point of Contact: Dr. Burnie Roper, roper.b@lacklandisd.net

Campus Education Improvement Council (CEIC)
The Campus Education Improvement Council (CEIC) is a campus-level committee responsible for providing input to the annual development of the Campus Improvement Plan. This plan comprises the campus’s goals and objectives for continuous improvement in special programs, professional development, student achievement, and student safety.
Points of Contact
Lackland Elementary School, Mrs. Terry Leija, Leija.t@lacklandisd.net
Stacey Jr./Sr High School, Dr. Hunter Shelby, Shelby.h@lacklandisd.net
District Calendar Committee
The District Calendar Committee assists the district in the development of the school calendar. Lackland ISD’s District Calendar Committee will develop the calendar for the 2027-2028 school year for board approval. The committee also makes any necessary recommendations for the previously board-approved 2026-2027 school calendar based on new information. The District Calendar Committee meets after school during the spring semester. Following the initial meeting to design the calendar, the committee may have additional meetings to consider stakeholder feedback and finalize the calendar for the District Education Improvement Council and the Board of Trustees.

ParentSquare

Lackland ISD continues to strive toward improving communication.

ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app
*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events
*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.
Parent Square Notifications

Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.

Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.

The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Meet Mrs. Smith

smith
By: Brooke Voorhees, 9th grade
Please welcome Mrs. Leslie Smith, the new elementary librarian, to Lackland ISD!

1. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Los Gatos, California. My Dad was in the Marines for a while, so we did move around a bit. I went to school at Alta Vista Elementary and Leigh High School in California. Living there grew my love for the beach!

2. What college did you go to?
I am a Horned Frog from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas
where I studied elementary education. I traveled to Texas for college, and I have mostly lived here ever since. I graduated from Texas Woman's University in 2015 with my Master's degree in Library Science. Books have always been a passion of mine, so this path just made sense.

3. What schools have you worked at?
Teaching has been my focus for many years. I started in Fort Worth at Lily
B. Clayton Elementary. When my husband worked at NASA in Virginia, I taught in Williamsburg at Norge Elementary. Recently, I was the librarian at Van Raub Elementary in Boerne and Las Lomas Elementary in the Stone Oak area of San Antonio. I have always loved school! My mom was a teacher, and I followed her lead...

4. What is your favorite book?
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is one of my favorite books. But I also love One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and All the Places to Love by Paticia MacLachlan. My favorite genre would be realistic fiction because I like to read about people and their relationships.

5. What is your favorite part about working in the library?
I love working in the library and helping students and teachers find books
that make them happy! Connection is everything to me!

6. What drew you to becoming a librarian?
At my first school in College Station, Texas, I loved the library and the
librarian! Patricia was a delight and helped others all day every day. At
Southwood Valley Elementary, I realized that I wanted to be a librarian and help people conduct research and find books to enjoy!

7. If you could, what book would you live in?
Little Houses by Kevin Henkes is a wonderful book about a trip to the
beach. Spending a day at the beach walking on the shore and putting my toes in the sand is my favorite! I would probably live in the pages of this book or another beach trip adventure story.

8. What character do you think you are the most similar to?
My husband calls me Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus book
collection. I like adventures and being outside, so Ms. Frizzle is probably a
character that I am able to relate to. She also loves teaching and helping others learn new things. That would be me!

9. What is your favorite way to spend your free time?
In my free time, you will probably find me outside hiking, kayaking, or
swimming. My dogs, Kona and Marley, and my husband Kelly like to join in these activities, too. When I need to rest, you will catch me reading a good book or watching a movie or a sunset.
10. What’s a skill you would like to learn?
I hope to teach students how to find a good fit book and how to locate
material for research. In this world, there is a plethora of information. Learning to navigate the flow and find what is interesting to you is an important skill.

11. What book would you recommend for middle schoolers?
For middle school students, I would recommend A Light in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat for an adventure, or Refugee by Alan Gratz to learn about kids from other places and their experiences. One more book...Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan is a taste of history, a little fantasy, and an exciting tale. There are some amazing books out there! Let's find one that makes you smile!
Thank you Mrs. Smith!

🌟 Eagle Excellence & Golden Eagle Awards 🌟

This week, the counselors had the honor of celebrating both our students and staff with the Eagle Excellence Award (for students) and the Golden Eagle Award (for staff). Each month, nominees are recognized for showing the character trait of the month—August’s focus was Respect and Friendliness.
We were thrilled to receive 8 student submissions across multiple grade levels and 7 staff and teacher nominations. Our Golden Eagle winners this month were Dr. Crawford and Mrs. Mccray!
Every nominee received a certificate with the kind words from their nomination printed on the back, and student winners also received a small prize. We are so proud of all our students and staff who continue to make our school a respectful, friendly, and encouraging place to be!

Library Scoop

Book care was the topic for students in the library this week! We talked about how food/snacks, water, and pets can cause damage to our books, so we must remember to put library books in our backpacks when we are not reading them. Our PreK and Kindergarten friends checked out books and will be bringing them home this week. What a great week of exploring and reading!
