Martin Luther King Jr. Day

mlk
Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.,[1] and often referred to shorthand as MLK Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the third Monday of January each year. King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law and civil society. The movement led to several groundbreaking legislative reforms in the United States.
Born in 1929, Martin Luther King Jr.'s actual birthday is January 15 (which in 1929 fell on a Tuesday). The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21. The Monday observance is similar for those federal holidays which fall under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. Official observance in each state's law as well as federal law occurred in 2000.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed to recognize Dr. King’s contributions to the civil rights movement and his role in advancing equality, voting rights, and nonviolent social change in the United States. When signing the legislation that established the holiday in 1983, President Ronald Reagan stated:
“Our nation has decided to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by setting aside a day each year to remember him and the just cause he stood for.”
The holiday encourages Americans to participate in volunteer activities that support and strengthen their communities. Many people mark the day by attending commemorative events, engaging in service projects, or learning more about Dr. King’s work and its historical impact.

Lackland ISD Library Book Donations and Purchase Preview Process

book
In accordance with Policy EFB (Local), all new library book donations and purchases must be available for community review for a minimum of 30 days before they can be approved by the Lackland ISD Board of Trustees and added to library shelves.
To ensure transparency, Lackland ISD will publish a list of proposed book titles 30 days before Board approval. Each title will include all applicable ISBN formats (paperback, hardcover, e-book, audiobook, etc.).

Important: Posting a list does not mean every title will be adopted. Individual titles may be excluded based on feedback or district review.

Below are current lists of titles to be considered within the noted 30-day review period and projected date for Board of Trustees’ consideration. If you would like to provide feedback on any proposed title, please use the feedback form link provided. Your input will be considered by the district before final decisions are made.

ParentSquare

Lackland ISD continues to strive toward improving communication.

ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app
*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events
*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.
Parent Square Notifications

Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.

Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.

The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Stacey Flashback: Hailey Barentine

 By: Brooke Voorhees, 9th grade
hailey
1. How many years did you attend Stacey Allred Virginia Jr/Sr High? Did you graduate from here?
I attended Stacey all four years of high school. I graduated from Stacey in 2021.

2. What college did you attend after graduating from Stacey? What is your major?
Immediately after high school, I attended Northwest Vista and received my Associate of Arts in Education. I am currently attending Texas A&M-San Antonio and will receive my Bachelor of Science in Education in 2026.

3. What career are you pursuing?
I am pursuing a career in the education field. My current plan is to finish my Bachelor's degree and go straight into a Master's program afterwards. The end goal is to become a school counselor.

4. What are some of your favorite memories of going to school here? Were you in any extracurricular activities?
My favorite memories are playing sports and having to figure out online high school during COVID. The extracurriculars that I was involved in were: Volleyball, Tennis, S2S, Choir, and Theatre.

5. Are you still in contact with any of your Stacey classmates?
I am! I am still very good friends with Aaliyah Kirton. She is one of the bridesmaids in my wedding.

6. What was your favorite class during high school?
My favorite class in high school was Psychology with Mrs. Loewenstein. She is the teacher who made me realize I wanted to be a teacher.

7. How do you think your classmates would remember you?
I think my classmates might remember me as someone who was outgoing.

8. What advice would you give to Stacey’s senior class?
Be unapologetically yourself. Pursue what you love and do not let anyone take that away from you. Be kind to everyone you encounter; you might not know what they have going on.

9. How do you spend your free time?
I spend my free time working out and doing photography. I have photographed weddings, seniors, college graduates, you name it! I specifically love 35mm film photography and own a couple of older cameras.

10. Is there anything else you would like to share?
High school may seem like it goes on forever, but it is just a small bit of your life. I really discovered who I was and wanted to be outside of high school. Join all the clubs and make as many memories as you can! You will never be this young again.
Thank you Hailey!

Library Scoop

Responsibility was an important topic with our school counselors in the library this week! Students considered questions and problems and a variety of solutions. We are proud of our learners and the growth they show each week! Students chose new books and revisited book and shelf care as a class. Next week, some of our classes will explore force and motion with a fun project in the library. Happy reading!
