Step Right Up! Celebrating National School Lunch Week

Our school cafeterias were filled with excitement, creativity and a little circus magic this week as our dedicated cafeteria staff celebrated National School Lunch Week with special menu items, festive decorations and fun events for students!
Observed annually during the second week of October, National School Lunch Week (NSLW) has been a cherished tradition since President Lyndon B. Johnson established it by proclamation in 1962. This nationwide celebration highlights the important role school meals play in supporting students’ health, well-being and academic success.
This year’s theme, “Cafeteria Circus,” shines a spotlight on the incredible work school nutrition teams do every day. Much like a circus performance, serving school meals requires teamwork, creativity and the ability to keep many things moving at once. From preparing nutritious meals and serving hundreds of hungry students to creating a welcoming cafeteria atmosphere, our cafeteria staff work hard to make every school day a little brighter.
Throughout the week, our cafeteria teams brought the celebration to life with special menu offerings, colorful decorations and engaging activities that added extra fun to the lunch experience. These festive touches gave students an opportunity to enjoy something special while recognizing the people who work behind the scenes to nourish and support them.
National School Lunch Week is also an opportunity to recognize the dedication of school nutrition professionals across the country. Led by the School Nutrition Association (SNA), the annual celebration encourages school communities to recognize the people behind every meal and the meaningful difference they make in students’ lives.
A big round of applause for our cafeteria staff! Thank you for your hard work, creativity and commitment to serving our students each day. Your efforts help fuel learning, build connections and make our schools welcoming places for every student. This week, and every week, we celebrate the amazing team that makes lunchtime something special!

Celebrating Leadership and Dedication: Lackland ISD Honors National Boss’s Day

October 16 marks National Boss’s Day across the United States, providing a wonderful opportunity for the Lackland Independent School District community to show appreciation for the dedicated leaders who guide our schools. From school principals to district administrators, our bosses work tirelessly behind the scenes to foster a supportive, innovative environment where both students and staff can excel.

Leading a military-connected school district comes with unique opportunities and challenges. This year, under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Burnie Roper and the district administrative team, Lackland ISD has been charging forward with its strategic theme of "Keeping It 100". This commitment aims for absolute excellence across effective instruction, family engagement, and positive school culture. Effective leadership from our district directors, principals, and department heads ensures that these goals transition from a vision on paper into a daily reality for our campuses. A great leader in education does more than manage operations; they motivate their staff, champion professional growth, and anchor the school ecosystem. Whether overseeing facility updates, coordinating complex curriculum audits, or keeping our campuses safe, the leadership team at Lackland ISD carries multifaceted responsibilities with grace and determination.
Please take a moment today to say "thank you" to your supervisor, principal, or administrator. A simple note of gratitude or a warm word of appreciation goes a long way in recognizing the people who help keep Lackland ISD a proud, high-performing district. Happy National Boss’s Day to all of our incredible leaders!

Stacey Cross Country

The Stacey Cross Country team travelled to Harper, TX on October 14th to compete in the District 29-AA Cross Country Championships.
The girls kicked things off with a bang as three of our four runners finished in the top 10 to advance to Regionals! Selah Ventura (4th place; 14:17), Lilly Dubbs (5th place; 14:29) and Makayla Mandujano (8th place; 15:00) will compete in the UIL Region IV Cross Country Championships in Corpus Christi on October 26th.

After the girls' race, it was the boys' turn. Jarred Dunn led the boys, finishing 3rd overall with a time of 18:59. Gabriel and Roel Garcia followed him, finishing 6th (19:49) and 9th (20:30), respectively.  Lazaro Barajas (11th: 20:47) and Cameron Westerlund (14th; 21:07) put the top five boys all in the top fifteen spots. Once the race was over, the Stacey boys' team was crowned District Champions! This marks the third consecutive District title for Stacey and fourth in five years! The boys (including Riley Silva and Mikhail Avilez) will also compete in the UIL Region IV Cross Country Championships.

In the Junior High races, Landon Wempe placed 3rd in the 7th grade race with a time of 14:48. In the 8th grade race Joshua Philpott ran an impressive 12:00 to win the race and Jacob Dunlap finished 7th with a time of 14:31.

Meet Ms. Garcia

by: Gabriel Fleener, senior
garcia

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas.

Where did you go to high school and college?
Graduated from Texas A&M University in 2015.

How long have you been teaching?
This is my eighth year in education, but my first year at Lackland ISD and my first-year teaching 5th grade.

What is your favorite part of teaching?
My favorite part of teaching is seeing students' faces light up when they finally understand a concept or master a skill we have been working on. Those moments make all the hard work worthwhile. I love working with children because every day is different. They keep me laughing, and I enjoy building meaningful relationships with them. Over the course of the year, they become like family to me, even if it is only for a short time
.
What is your favorite book?
One of my favorite hobbies is reading. Barnes & Noble is one of my happy places, and growing up, I loved visiting the downtown San Antonio library when it first opened. It is hard for me to choose just one favorite book, but The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is definitely in my top five.

What is your favorite food?
I am also a big foodie and love discovering new restaurants around San Antonio. I enjoy trying all kinds of foods, but sushi will always be my favorite. No matter what I try, I somehow always end up craving sushi and going back for more!

Do you have any kids? How old are they?
My greatest joy is my one-year-old daughter. Last year, I had the opportunity to take time away from teaching and stay home with her, which allowed me to experience all of her first milestones. Watching her explore the world for the first time was incredibly special and something I will always cherish.

Do you have any pets?
As for pets, we do not have any right now, and honestly, I am a little nervous about the day my daughter starts asking for one!

Stacey Flashback: Cody Miller

by: Ashlee Davee, junior
cody
Cody Miller graduated from Stacey way back in 2010. He currently serves as a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood. Cody still holds the Stacey school record in the shot put.

What year did you go to Stacey and when did you graduate?
I attended Stacey from 2007-2010. I was part of class of 2010.
How many years did you attend Lackland ISD?
I attended Lackland ISD for three years, grade 10 through 12.
What are some activities/sports you did when at Stacey?
Was on cross country team, basketball team, and track and field. Was also a part of Student Council.
 What was your favorite class?
Because of the teacher, Spanish - Mrs. MK helped me a lot in getting through high school - then for topic, Chemistry. I really enjoyed science and math combined into one.
What are some of your favorite memories at Stacey?
All the bus trips for sports, and since we were at a small school most people played same sports, so we became friends and had great times. Also, the coaches really made an impact on me growing up, for example I talked to Coach Flores every day when leaving school.
What do you do now?
I am currently in the Army.
Where do you live?
I live in Fort Hood, TX.
Looking back, what is the most important lesson you learned during your time at school?
I learned to get along with different groups of people. Since we all came from different backgrounds or had different interests, I got to know a lot of different people. It has paid off greatly in my adult life.
Are you still in touch with anyone from your school days?
Not too much, I have a lot of them as friends on social media and when I visit San Antonio or areas they live, we try to meet up.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I have gotten to travel almost everywhere I have wanted to go. I have been to every continent for at least a week. But one place I want to explore more for fun and not working is Rome.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Free time is mostly spent in the gym or spending as much time as I can with my wife and daughter. I have traveled a lot and missed a lot of time with both, so I try to give as much time as possible to them.
Is there any advice you would like to give?
To really enjoy everything. I went from a very large school in my 9th grade to a much smaller school. At first, I thought I would hate it but being so small and having everything have a similar background, ie parents in the military, helped everyone to stay close, not to mention, I was able to know everyone in my class. Then like any school, by the end I was just waiting to graduate and started to lose focus on enjoying the moments or stopped trying to stay close with friends because I was too focused on the future. Enjoy every day, it should be the same after school, enjoy every day in life.
Thank you, Cody! And thank you for your service!

Mrs. Payne's social studies classes have been studying Hispanic Heritage!

Alebrijes (pronounced ah-leh-bree-hehss) are bright, colorful monster sculptures from Mexico made out of pure imagination! They are mashups of different animals mixed together—like a cat with eagle wings, a lizard with rabbit ears, or a dog with a dragon's tail. This alebrijes is a snake!

Library Scoop

Welcome fall and all the festivities that come with it! We are excited about the Storybook Pumpkin Family Literacy Project that delights all of our students. Storybook pumpkin creations are welcome to be turned into the library to be put on display starting Monday, October 19th - Friday, October 30th. Each participant will receive a free book. Big fun! Parents and families are invited to work on this project with their child, and all of our students will vote on their favorite Storybook Pumpkin the last week of October.

Students have heard another great story about a grandfather, Abuelito, and his grandson making dream catchers and selling them at a market. It was fun to learn a couple of Spanish words and to talk about our dreams and wishes. We have been checking out lots of new books, and we are anxious to hear what students think about the book they are reading. Happy reading Eagles!

GIFTED AND TALENTED FAMILY NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 2026

An October Reset for GT Families

Helping busy minds find balance as the school year gains momentum
By October, the excitement of a new school year may begin to fade. Assignments become more challenging, schedules feel busier, and the next school break can seem far away. Gifted students may experience this part of the year especially intensely as they balance high expectations, perfectionism, busy minds, and the everyday demands of school.
Return to the Basics
•  Protect sleep. A consistent bedtime and time away from screens help busy minds and bodies recover from the school day.
•  Choose water and nourishing meals. Healthy habits support concentration, steady energy, and emotional regulation.
•  Make time to move and play. Outdoor activity and unstructured play provide an important mental break and help relieve stress.
•  Create space for conversation. Ask what felt exciting, difficult, or surprising - not only what grade your child earned.
•  Celebrate effort and growth. Notice perseverance, creative thinking, thoughtful questions, and lessons learned from mistakes.
•  Leave room for rest. Gifted children do not need to be challenged every moment. Quiet time and simply doing nothing can restore creativity and curiosity.
One Helpful Question
Try asking: “What is one thing you worked through today, even when it was difficult?”
October can feel long, but it also gives families an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and reset. Sometimes the best way to help a child move forward is to pause, breathe, and begin again.
